The Importance of Having a Birth Partner Present During Labor and Delivery | GIVING BIRTH DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
In light of everything happening in the world right now, pregnant women like yourself have a lot to be concerned about. One of those concern is that you may have to give birth without your birth team by your side. In this video, I will share evidence on the importance of having a birth partner present during labor and delivery so you can advocate for yourself as well as some tips to remedy this situation if you do end up being required to give birth by yourself.
A Cochrane review from 2017 found that having a birthing partner present:
The response from medical system regarding the COVID-19 outbreaks is sometimes removing doula and/or partner from the room.
"All pregnant women, including those confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infections, have the right to high quality care before, during and after childbirth. This includes antenatal, newborn, postnatal, intrapartum and mental health care." - WHO, March 18th 2020
Here are a few tips to help you have an empowering birth experience if your hospital is banning partner and companions during delivery or is considering implementing a ban:
Remember to keep an eye out for policies about support people and be proactive in reaching our to politicians and hospital administrators.
